Before You Begin...

Linux Distributions

Because Linux is an open-source operating system, anyone can extend and distribute the system. Several companies and organizations put together the Linux kernel along with a host of programs and their own special setup utility and distribute the whole package on CD-ROM. These are called "distributions". Obtaining Your Copy of Linux has a list of the major Linux distributions and links to where you can learn details about each. Linux Installation, Step by Step has links to the official installation documentation for each distribution, as well as links to Control-Escape's reviews of the software and the installation procedure for each.

Some Background Reading

Before you try to install Linux, you'll want to do some reading about the process and the environment so you have a better idea what to expect. I recommend you start with The Linux Installation and Getting Started Guide. This was once available in hardcopy but is apparently now out of print. However, you can read it online courtesy of the Linux Documentation Project. It hasn't been updated for a while, but this complete book will give you some ground to stand on when you're staring at that Linux command prompt for the first time. You may also want to read the DOS/Windows to Linux HOW-TO. If you're an old-time DOS user, this will jump start your Linux know-how. But even if you aren't, it makes an excellent quick-read introduction to the Linux environment.

If paper is your thing, we recommend you pick up a copy of The Official Ubuntu Book or Linux for Non-Geeks Either book is an excellent introduction to Linux for a new user.
